I chose this image for my first post because as you can see, it makes a big statement.
Recently, I have had many encounters (and a few arguments) with people on the topic of tattoos and piercings. I myself have 3 piercings, and plan to get a few tattoos as well. I know many people with both of these things, and numerous other body modifications. You would think that in the 21st century, with all of the other problems in the world, getting a hole in your body or a picture on your skin would not be a big issue.
Body modifying is increasingly becoming more popular in mainstream media. Tattoos, piercings, stretched ears, and other modifications are showing up on everyone from common people to celebrities. It is a form of personal self-expression, or to represent a memory.
Yet, there are many stigmas placed on people that have them.
In the workplace, body modifications are frowned upon for being "unprofessional." There is a widespread idea that if you have these things, you are a "freak," "wild," or will not execute your job properly. You will not have bedside manner (medically), or you are an unkind person, or rough around the edges. I could go on and on…
But yet, some of the kindest people I know have their bodies modified. What does this say about our country as a whole, when there are so many more serious issues to be addressed? A person that has a tattoo may save your life, or do something for you that you never expect. They may be kind and generous and all the other good things in life. However, if the world is closed-minded about these things, they will never know.

It all goes to show: never judge a book by its cover!
Although i do think tattoos and piercings can be cool and beautiful, i think people need to be smart about where exactly they put them. Depending on what someone is going for, there is a certain level of professionalism expected and they need to find out if any tattoo is acceptable. I know when my dad interviews people for jobs, he checks their faces and ears for any extra piercings or empty holes. Just because they weren't wearing their eyebrow piercing then, doesn't mean they wont wear it again or while at work.
